Our local hospital was tax exemption under Section B of 58.1-3606. I’m not sure under what classisfication they deemed it exempt but we’ve upheld it. In 2012 the hospital was sold to Riverside Health Systems. I wrote to them asking for the source of their exemption. They replied with at letter stateing their 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Well as we all know that in its self does not exempt them from real and personal property tax. Their latest response sites 58.1-3606 (a) (5) which sites “religious” associations. Riverside is not a religious hospital. I strongly feel they are taxable. My board, who is displeased with them, wants me to tax them, and I did for 2013. They still maintain they are exempt. Any help or insite in this would be greatly appreciated. Anyone with a similiar situation?
